Common Causes of Motor Vehicle Accidents in Las Vegas
When you live in the bustling oasis that is Las Vegas, you are bound to run into a bit of trouble in traffic once in a while. Across the lineup of casinos, entertainment venues, shopping centers, hotels, and bars that decorate the Strip, people tend to forget that they are wandering through a packed city like ours. In the midst of colorful craziness, though, some drivers can unwillingly get to know one another by means of inconvenient car crashes.
Accidents in any form are unpleasant and inconvenient, but car crashes, in particular, can be terrifying.
For today, let’s take a closer look at common causes of motor vehicle accidents in Las Vegas.
The Frequency of Accidents in Las Vegas
According to a report provided by HG.org, Las Vegas ranks as #144 out of the 200 cities that have been highlighted for safe driving. In fact, drivers in our city are 21% more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident than the average American driver. Even more upsetting, officials have predicted that Las Vegas residents may suffer a car crash once every eight years.
Leading the National Rate of DUI
So why are car accidents so frequent in our state?
Based on a traffic report, one of the most common causes of motor vehicle accidents, if not the most common cause, is distracted/negligent driving. Examples of this problem include texting while driving, eating while driving, or being distracted by a passenger, among others.
However, as you may have expected, another cause of car crashes in our city stems from bottles and shot glasses (literally). According to another report, Las Vegas police make nearly 8,000 DUI arrests on a yearly basis. Now, take into consideration that the State of Nevada Office of Traffic Safety confirms that, from 2009 to 2013, one out of 106 motorists in the state have been arrested for driving drunk or under the influence of another drug.
A City That Never Sleeps
The NHTSA also warns that Las Vegas is a city that is teeming with non-stop entertainment and gaming facilities, meaning that hundreds of workers are continuously pulling off “graveyard shifts.” As a result, officials have warned that another cause of car crashes in the state is impairment due to lack of sleep (not, in this case, alcohol or drugs).
